The project aims to reinvigorate the over-salinated wetlands of the Mississippi River Delta that are currently separated from the fresh water and sediment supply by levees. We put forward 3 ‘units of change’ anchored in Myrtle Grove Hub as a gateway connecting leveed areas and the Barataria Basin: strategic willow planting to encourage and reinforce land-forming processes; a wetland literacy initiative to builddata systems, wetland constituencies and local resilience; floating oyster hatcheries to ensure higher mobility of loca fishermen in conditions of shifting water salinity. The three units work systemically and symbiotically. Together, they help local communities retain ownership and a stron working presence in the basin both, during the land-building process and after its completion. The progression of the land formation process can be accelerated with the use of sediment retention structures, complemented by willow planting. Their location will be guided by land formation and salinity data analysis outcomes. Both the sediment retention structures and willows will capture sediment and create sustainable and natural barricades against sea level rise and storm surge. The products of these planting strategies serve as potential sources of energy; woody biomass can be farmed and processed regionally and on a smaller scale by individual land owners. With the Co-op model, floating cages and consolidated leases, Oyster people will be able to move their beds around regardless of the current boundaries. These beds are then supported by nodes which are shared mobile hatcheries. This distributed system will provide oyster seeds more efficiently than the current state-owned seeding grounds. It comprises three main components: an industrial section, a retail section, and a research section. The industrial module will house a boat library, processing centers for willow farming and oyster farming, and serve as a boat entry point. The retail module will cater to both the local communities and visitors, and create an active destination for residents of the towns situated along the Mississippi River levee. However as land was taken from them, the practice of intercropping was lost. Our project seeks to revive the lost cultural farming practices and promote communal stewardship of land. Retail spaces along the commercial U will be most affected due to a major typological shift from an area mostly populated with 1-story retail, to a street allowing mid-rise commercial buildings. This will not only increase rent, but will also change the urban form, where its cultural and economic DNA is rooted in. However, the university has a plan to convert it into a new student housing complex to be prefabricated using its own design-build facility located inside.&nbsp; The housing typology attempts to encourage student’s collaboration through a network of distributed urban farms. The private room’s locations revolve around these plants platforms which form interlocking units. To study the possibilities, I have researched on one of the fundamental knots in human societies, conversations. Being in Bangkok, my reseach started by observing “conversations around activities”. Activities like playing chess or going to dentist have been monitored, analyzed, and diagrammed. From the research, I have learned that activities are the agents that create “Displaced Cognitive Space” or the invisible boundary in which the people involved in the activity developed a sense of connection among each other. To create a continent-wide sense of connection (displaced cognition), coreographed political rituals are used as tools for communication, gathering and emotional engagement both among the performers and to the ideology they subscribe to. Ritualistic architectures are vehicles of abstractions that enhance the productivity of the activities. Senior centers are closing making it difficult for the elderly to get access to their basic needs and to travel from place to place. In Manhattan, we aim to define the most livable blocks for the elderly, where even during the current global COVID pandemic, they can maintain a high standard of living. Our area of study is centered around the Morningside heigh and the Upper West Side from 59th street to 125th stree roughly west of Central Park and Morningside Park. Our aim is two-fold: first, to define the favorable area in block level, to determine if it is currently matching the locations of th current elderly population. Research Questions 1. Where are the most favorable blocks for New York’s elderly who live alone in Manhattan, as they pertain to factors like public space, public transportation, super markets and hospital? 2. In comparison to our research, what is the present density of elderly located in specific areas in new york city. Do they match the favourable areas or not?Methodology We would know the answer using the scoring system and by doing map algebra, we will be able to identify the favorable area and blocks according to our definition. Mekong Columbia University, GSAPP, Urban Design Studio III, Summer 2021Collaborators: Zuzanna Jarzynska, Aruna Ananta Das, Cheng Ju LeeAdvisors: Kate Orff, Geeta Mehta, Dilip Da Cunha, Adriana Chavez, Justine Holzman, Tori Vuono As part of the Water Urbanism studio situated in the Mississippi river basin, the Mekong or the Lancang River, flowing across 5 South East Asian countries and China, has been chosen as a case study to compare with. The river is a vital economic resource as well as a heated contested site between upper and lower stream countries. Physicality and Settlements Although similar to Mississippi in terms of the volume of discharge, the Mekong is 4 times smaller in terms of drainage area while the size of delta and amount sediment discharge are similar. In comparison to Mississippi, it is less regulated, less leveed. For example, in the town of Luang Prabang, dikes were only started to get built in 2008. It is distant from the river separated by a floodplain left for the water level to increase. At the outlet, a water city like CanTho in Vietnam has been embracing the wetness through its planning, lifestyle and architecture for centuries. With steeper topography, China has constructed cascading dams for hydroelectric power production since the 1990s. Water cycle has been altered based on needs like power grid maintenance instead of following the agricultural cycle downstream. Countries like Laos also invested heavily in hydroelectric dams to become batteries of Asia and export their energy. To mitigate coordination issues, 5 countries formed the Lower Mekong Commission sponsored by the US, Japan and Korea while China refused to join. In 2019, China started holding water without informing lower countries which caused one of the worst draughts on a river that 60 million people rely on. The environmental effects of the dams cause a lot of chain effects that are beyond political boundaries. The dams in the upstream will block the sediment flow and at the same time hinder fish migration. This ends up coastline erosion and the loss of mangroves. Moreover, because the dams are holding water upstream, it results in a lot of issues related to the rice field in the Mekong delta. By the 1960s, already 50% of Americans lived in a car-oriented suburb. Today, 69% of Americans live in detached houses. Instead of investing in public housing, federal programs turned to subsidizing private real estate and thus incentivized home ownership as a way to generate wealth. This process continues to broaden inequalities which were once established by redlining practices in planning and banking. Now, white Americans have at their disposal the wealth accumulated for generations, while families of color continue to be marginalized by neighborhood associations and mortgage lenders. Local zoning plans support segregation of single-family houses on lots of prescribed minimum size. Despite the shrinking household sizes, developers build ever larger estates. Future owners expect idyllic, simple life, whilst the hidden financial and, more importantly, environmental costs of that decision are rarely discussed. Hellberg The Home Manifesto was a series of projects exploring the meaning of the word “HOME”. Through the different phases, my definition of the word slowly changed. Phase I - The Snow White House The exploration started with the study of the Snow White House, an imaginary place created by Walt&nbsp; Disney’s illustrators influenced by many sourcesof inspirations including 19th century european illustrations, rounds of experiments on different human expressions, and collective effort of those who drew each frame that constitutes a scene. It is also a combination of unrealistic spaces for narrative and dramatic purposes.
